Preparing your home for newborn photography is crucial to ensure the best photos are captured. A well-prepared environment can create a comfortable and safe space for your baby, helping them stay calm and content during the session. A clutter-free and tidy home also allows the photographer to focus on capturing beautiful moments without distractions. Additionally, preparing your home ahead of time can save you stress on the day of the photo shoot and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
You can work with your photographer to help you. Most photographers will come to your home in advance to preview your situation. Or, you can have a video call together. They will be able to tell you what items may not be optimal. Most images are taken in the nursery, if there is one, the living room and the master bedroom. The bed serves as a posing table the photographer can use to get some semi posed images of your baby.
Many people invest in a new comforter and matching pillows to add some pop and freshness to the room. Also, removing “clutter” is a good thing. While little items you have on mantels and bookcases are fine for everyday life, they are not so attractive in photos. Clear shelves and floor areas that will be in images.
If you are doing your own photos at home, you can create a great backdrop for your newborn photo session by using a plain-colored sheet or blanket. Natural light is easiest for photos, so position your baby near a window. Use soft, indirect light to avoid harsh shadows. You can place the baby near a window, then place a piece if white foam board on the other side of the baby to fill in shadows. Ensure the area is clutter-free to keep the focus on your adorable newborn.
When selecting locations in your home for newborn photography sessions, remember that natural light is essential for beautiful photos. Choose rooms with large windows that let in ample natural light. Areas with neutral-colored walls and minimal clutter work best as they won't distract from your baby in the photos. Additionally, consider cozy spots like the nursery, master bedroom, or living room for a comfortable and intimate setting. Remember, the focus should always be on your newborn, so choose locations that enhance their presence in the photographs.
Newborns can also be photographed outside in the shade. If you have a yard or garden, select a basket to place your newborn in. Put this on the grace, or amongst green plants. Take the image from above and from the side.
Make sure to gather all the props and accessories you want to include in the photoshoot. It's essential to have everything ready beforehand so that the session runs smoothly. Opt for soft blankets, cute hats, and tiny outfits to enhance the beauty of your newborn's photos. Consider using buckets, baskets, or fluffy rugs to add variety to the pictures. Don't forget to select items that complement your home's decor, creating a cohesive and appealing aesthetic for the photos.
Newborns photograph best if you start with a good swaddle. This is calming and soothing to them. First, dress them in the outfit you want. Then swaddle over it. Then the outfit is all set to go once you remove the swaddle.
In general, for family photos, the oldest person in the photo should be holding the baby. So if you have grandparents in the images, take turns having grandma and grandpa hold the baby. Of course, you can have anyone you wish hold the baby, but in general, allow at least one image with the oldest person in the photo to hold the baby.
If you have other children, it is best to have them seated on the floor. This makes it easier for them to either hold the baby, or look down into a basket or bowl the baby is in.
If you are all seated on a couch or sofa, remember to have everyone scoot up to the very edge. This will help with good posture. It is also slimming. If you all sit way back on the cough, the image can look distorted because legs and feet can look much larger than you want.
To create a cozy space for the newborn's photo session, aim for a quiet environment without distractions.
