How To Help Your Child When They Get Teased
Arm Your Child With Skills To Deal With Teasing

Most people remember a time in their childhood where they were teased by their classmates and peers. However, watching your kid go through it is another story. It can be heartbreaking to see your child struggle with their confidence because of bullying. Here are some ways you can work through those issues with them.
Their Name
Especially if your child has an uncommon name, they can find themselves being teased for their name in school. Students that come from a non-English speaking country, or those with complicated names are often teased by their classmates. This can be a source of insecurity for your children. Usually, this only happens when your child is young, and the names are usually silly hurtful nicknames. However, it can be incredibly difficult for your child. If your child is going through this, teach them the importance of standing up for themselves in a polite way. The best way to get your child through bullying is by teaching them not to be bothered by it.
Their Appearance
Unfortunately, much of the societal hierarchy while growing up is based on appearance. Things like your child’s height, weight, hair style, and more can all be fuel for a bully’s fire. Usually, someone’s appearance is something that is very tied to their self-esteem. Bullies know that by attacking someone’s appearance, they are hitting them where it hurts. For example, crooked teeth may prompt teasing and discourage your child from smiling, but there are things you can do as a parent to help them. Teach your child body positivity, and that their worth comes from more than their appearance. One helpful option is to give them positive affirmations about their appearance to repeat in the mirror.
Their Social Skills
Oftentimes, children who fall behind developmentally are made fun of by their peers. Additionally, those who are shy or not very social can be seen as strange and mocked for their quiet natures. This makes it even harder for your children to make friends. If your child has been struggling with making friends, or if they’re being teased for their social skills, it can be incredibly difficult for them. Teach them the importance of making friends who love and understand them for who they are. Try enrolling them in afterschool activities with like minded kids. If your child loves drawing, they can take an art class.
Seeing your child go through the difficulties of being teased and bullied is every parent’s worst nightmare. It’s impossible for you to understand why everyone doesn’t love and appreciate your child as much as you. If you notice any signs that your child might be being bullied, try some of these tips to help them through it.
